John Keble (1745-1835) was the son of John Keble, and matriculated at Corpus Christi College, Oxford, in 1763. BA 1766, fellowship, MA. 1770. Vicar of Colne and perpetual curate of Poulton, Wiltshire, from 1783 until his death. Married Sarah Maule (d.1823); his surviving children were John (1792-1866), Thomas (1793-1875), Elizabeth (d.1860) and Mary Anne (d.1826). John Coleridge Patteson, 1827-1871, first missionary bishop in Melanesia, was born in England and ordained in 1853. In 1855 he left England for Auckland and in 1856 made his first voyage to Melanesia where he initiated a scheme of educating Melanesian boys in New Zealand and Norfolk Island. In 1861 Patteson was consecrated bishop and in addition to his religious and educative pursuits, studied Melanesian languages. Patteson was killed on the island of Nukapu in 1871. From the descrip...
